1978 Mickey Thompson Challenger IV

Vintage Vehicles-202759

Own a piece of Off Road Racing History!!!

Built in 1977, Challenger IV was the brain child of none other than Speed King, Mickey Thompson.
We believe Challenger IV was one of the most technologically advanced off road cars of its era. Mickey was incorporating massive shocks, Truggy chassis (part truck, part buggy), V8 power and 36" tall tires that would become the norm in off road racing, only this happened in the late 70's while it took a few decades for it to catch on.

CH4 was restored in 2014, raced the NORRA Mexican 1000 (DNF while leading at the 600 mile mark), then raced and WON the Vintage class at the 2016 MINT 400. Since that time it has been used at trade shows, museum tours and even hit the La Jolla Concours D'Elegance car show and pulled off an impressive 2nd place in the race car category. The racer is prepped and even though it has been retired by it's current owner it can still be entered at any Off Road Racing event like the MINT 400, NORRA 500 and NORRA 1000. Don't be fooled, this is no trailer queen, she is a fire breathing dragon.

CH4 has a 112" wheelbase, 12" of front wheel travel with Halibrand knock off hubs, wilwood calipers, Howe performance Saginaw steering box, King shocks and Sway a way torsion bars. The motor is a 383 Chevy stroker, Holly carb, Brodix aluminum heads, Accel ignition, roller rockers and CR Racing radiator. The motor is rated at approx 500 hp. Trans is a 2 speed power glide built by Gearworks in Las Vegas, 3 link rear suspension connected to a Henry's magnesium Dana 60 with Titanium axle tubes, Halibrand knock off hubs and wilwood calipers. The fuel cell is a FuelSafe bladder and hold 46 gallons of 100 octane. All plumbing uses Earls Performance fittings and the racer was professionally wired by THR Wiring in San Diego. Cockpit consists of titanium trans shiels, suspended Mastercraft safety seat with motorcycle shock, B&M shifter, assortment of gauges and Accel coils for easy switching if needed. CH$ only has approx 800 race miles on it since restoration but was prepped after its last race in 2016.

Classic Auto Appraiser (Gary Haugley) professionally appraised CH4 in 2022 at $787,000.

This historic racer is being offered at $485,000. Price is negotiable, serious inquires only please.
If sold as a pair (CH3 and CH4), we can negotiate a better price.

Mickey Thompson's Challenger III

1975 Mickey Thompson Challenger III

Vintage Vehicles-202756

Own a piece of Off Road Racing history! Challenger III actually started out as ORMHOF inductee Larry Minors vehicle that he had built by Smokey Allerman back in 1975. This car was built to compete against friend and rival Parnelli Jones and his Big Oly Bronco and then the Chevy Blazers. Minor and fellow ORMHOF inductee Roger Mears raced the "Smokey SSI" chassis in a few races in 1975 including the Baja 500 and Baja 1000. In 1977 Mickey Thompson bought the car from Minor and changed the suspension and body to closely match his desert racer (Challenger IV). Challenger III was used solely as Mickeys short course racer but was also used at the 1977 Riverside world championships as a camera car with another ORMHOF inductee Johnny Johnson at the wheel.

Challenger III was built like a sprint car with a straight axle, but also supporting a VW styled beam front suspension with torsion bars and dual MT gas shocks. Steering is a Chevy Saginaw box attached to a center mounted "slider". Halibrand knock off hubs were used with Airheart calipers. The motor is one of 33 (we were told) custom aluminum blocks designed/built/raced by Thompson with aluminum brownfield heads and Holley 4 barrel carb. The motor is original, spins freely and is attached to a B&M 2 speed power glide transmission. The seat is suspended in the chassis with dual motorcycle shocks and a panhard bar. The rearend is a Henry's Magnesuim Dana 60 with titanium axle tubes, 3 link style suspension with Rick Hasselo 43" long custom 2.5" coilover shocks, summers brothers axles, knock off rear hubs and Airheart calipers. The small short course fuel cell is located in the rear in front of the rear sway bar/bump stop.

This car was torn down to the frame, cleaned up, located hard to find parts to get it back in the condition it is in now. This is a museum build but could be easily be made a runner if the new buyer wanted. This car is a true collectors vehicle because it is hard to find an off road vintage car this original, with the number of ORMHOF inductees tied to it and in such good shape. The racer was professionally appraised by Gary Haugley (Classic Auto Appraiser of San Diego) at $317,000 last year in its current condition.
