1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee was modified under previous ownership. The truck is finished in flat metallic gray and is powered by a 5.2-liter V8 paired with a custom-built four-speed 44RE automatic transmission and a dual-range transfer case. Modifications include a reinforced unibody, custom roll cage, fabricated roof rack, aftermarket long-travel suspension, 15″ beadlock wheels, 33″ Toyo tires, Dana Axles, and front and rear lockers. Ares Fabrication hood louvers were installed under current ownership, and service performed since April 2020 is said to have included cleaning the fuel system, changing the oil, and replacing the radiator, spark plugs, and fuel injectors. This ZJ Grand Cherokee has 149k miles and is now offered with an accident-free Carfax report and a clean Arizona title in my name.
The unibody has been reinforced with 3/16″ steel plate, and the exterior was refinished with spray-on bedliner tinted in metallic gray along with green striping. Modifications include a custom front bumper with a Warn 8,000-lb winch, a custom roof rack with aftermarket off-road lighting, a receiver hitch, aftermarket hood vents, LED headlights, and rock sliders.
Poison Spyder 15″ beadlock wheels wear 33×12.5″ Toyo Open Country M/T tires. A Rubicon Express Extreme Long Travel suspension setup was modified with Bilstein dampers, JKS adjustable coil spacers, hydraulic bump stops, and a pneumatically-operated disconnecting front sway bar with an onboard ARB compressor. Braking is handled by Ford Explorer Sport Trac front and Explorer Sport rear calipers, and the rotors and pads have been recently replaced.
The cabin is fitted with power-adjustable Recaro Evo 8 front seats trimmed in black along with a gray cloth rear bench with fitted neoprene covers. Modifications include a starter-interrupt switch, custom center switch panel, an LCD screen for the four-channel camera system, a PA system, and a rear-mounted CO2 bottle. The custom roll cage is reportedly made of 1.75″ x .120″ DOM tubing, and is tied into both the unibody and the custom roof rack. The cargo area houses a full-size spare, an air compressor, and a storage shelf.
The cruise control buttons on the leather-wrapped steering wheel have been wired to operate the winch. Instrumentation consists of a 120-mph speedometer, a 7k-rpm tachometer, and auxiliary gauges including an aftermarket transmission temperature gauge. The digital odometer shows 149k miles, approximately 9k of which were added by me.
The 5.2-liter Magnum V8 is paired with a four-speed 44RE automatic transmission, which has been rebuilt with a Sonnax valve body and internal components, Alto Red Eagle clutches, Kolene steel plates, and a 48RE rear planetary assembly. The dual-range NP231J transfer case is said to be equipped with wider gears and uprated chains, and it routes power to the rear or all four wheels with Tom Wood’s driveshafts. Service performed under current ownership includes cleaning the fuel system, changing the oil, installing a heavy-duty radiator, and replacing the spark plugs, fan assembly, air conditioning compressor, idle air control valve, fuel injectors, and serpentine belt and tensioner.
The front Dana 30 HP axle is trussed and gusseted and features a 4.56:1 ARB locking differential, while the rear Dana 44 axle is equipped with a 4.56:1 Detroit locking differential. Both axles have been fitted with TEN chromoly axle shafts. A PSC ram-assist steering system was added, and the tie rods, center link, steering gear housing, steering shaft, and a pitman arm were replaced under previous ownership. Aftermarket skid plates and additional components are powder-coated metallic gray.The Carfax report shows no accidents or other damage and lists history in Arizona and California. There is a ton of time, money, and effort that went into this build. It is carefully thought out and built to be able to blast down a lake bed at 50-60mph and run some of the harder trails, and it does it all pretty comfortably. I have daily driven the car for the last year or so,
