Selling my 1991 Toyota Pickup 4x4 w/ 5VZ-FE swap. I planned on keeping this truck for a long time and continuing to make improvements, but due to some recent life changes it’s just not the best fit for our future anymore. It’s been my fun little daily/weekend toy for the last couple of years and has been rock solid, never left me stranded, goes almost anywhere off-road, and cruises down the highway at 75mph no problem.
Anyone familiar with old Toyotas knows that these are very solid platforms to build from with a beefy, fully boxed frame and legendary reliability. The number one problem is that the 22RE 4-cylinder is gutless and the 3.0 V6 is notorious for eating head gaskets, while only delivering marginally more power.
This truck addresses both of those issues with a 3.4L 5VZ-FE engine swap from a 1997 T100 that nets around 190hp. This is a proper engine change that is fully SMOG legal in CA and has the BAR (Bureau of Automotive Repair) sticker to prove it, not some jerry-rigged swap. All of the gauges and creature comforts are fully functional (RPM, MPH, oil pressure, A/C, heat, radio, etc) a rare sight with most engine swaps. The 5VZ is mated to the sought after R151F 5-speed transmission (only found in late 80’s 22RE turbo pickups and 4Runners) that has a low-ratio 1st gear and is attached to a manual gear driven transfer case.
The Total Chaos long travel front suspension cycles 12” of wheel travel and increases track width by 6.5” while retaining 4WD with T100 front axles and manual locking hubs. It also has all of the TC upgrades including front shock hoops with Fox Remote Reservoir coilovers, lower Uniball conversion, heim steering, HD idler arm, crossmember, etc.
The rear just has a new set of Bilstein 5100’s installed right now, but I can include all of the long travel rear suspension parts for the right price. This includes Deaver F67 leaf springs, complete wider T100 rear axle with 4:88 gears to match the front ratio, and all of the TC parts to install everything (2 sets shackles, spring hangers, U-bolt plates, shock mounts, etc). Weld on some rear shock hoops, cycle it, add shocks and you’re on the way to 17+ inches of wheel travel!
The body features Hannemann fiberglass fenders, hood, and bedsides for clearance of the long travel suspension and 33x12.50 Nitto Trail Grappler tires on classic 15” American Racing AR23 wheels. Other upgrades include a new Bluetooth radio (color matched to factory dash lights), Kenwood race radio, LED headlights, HD shifter and T-case bushings, new UNI filter w/ Outerwear, tinted windows, fully sound deadened interior (butyl mat, MLV, and foam), dog platform/false floor, Borla exhaust, factory rear seats also included.
Although this truck is a very solid platform, I want to be as transparent as possible about any known issues, it’s a little rough around the edges (30+ year old truck) and there’s some things that I never got around to doing: Paint is rough, needs new CV boots installed (will include), driver side window is tough to roll up, ignition requires the classic ‘jiggle and turn’ method, small exhaust leak, front suspension could use a refresh (squeaky), power steering belt squeals sometimes, and the driver’s seat cover is in rough shape. Unknown mileage on the T-belt and water pump but I haven’t noticed any issues with overheating, I’ll include a complete OEM timing belt/water pump kit. Overall, it’s a great truck with a lot of potential for someone willing to put in a little elbow grease…
